About UMass Boston

The University of Massachusetts Boston also known as UMass Boston is a public university in Boston, Massachusetts. It is actually the only public research university in Boston and the third-largest campus in the five-campus University of Massachusetts system and it has an acceptance rate of 76%.

The university is the third most diverse university in the United States. While a majority of the students are Massachusetts residents, students from other states and international students make up a significant portion of the student body.

The university is an official member institution of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities, and the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. The university is classified among “R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity”. 

The University of Massachusetts Boston Branch is currently executing a 25-year master plan. This includes the construction of a complete science building (which is already opened), a comprehensive university building (which is already opened), renovation of the active teaching building, student dormitory, roads, and waterfront corridors, and reconstruction of public corridors.

UMass has freshman retention of 76% with an on-time graduation rate of 25%. The freshman retention rate is a good sign that full-time students like and enjoy the school and their professors enough to want to stick around for another year. It is also a sign that the admissions team did a nice job in picking applicants who were a good fit for the school.

The on-time graduation rate is the percentage of first-time, full-time students who obtain their bachelor’s degree in four years or less. And UMass is relatively low in comparison to the national rate of 33%.

UMass Boston Campuses

UMass Boston is located off Interstate 93 and within one mile of the JFK/UMass MBTA Station on the Red Line and the Old Colony Lines of the Commuter Rail. As of June 2021, the shuttle service at the university is unavailable and the MBTA Bus Routes 8 and 16 have been redirected to make stops at the university’s Residence Hall.

There are some notable buildings that can be found on the campus. Some of them are; McCormack Hall, Healey Library, Science Center, Quinn Administration Building, Wheatley Hall, Clark Athletic Center, Campus Center, Residence Hall East and West, Integrated Sciences Complex, University Hall, Monan Park, and the Parking Garage West.

UMass Boston provides several student services at their campus, including health service, nonremedial tutoring, health insurance, placement service. The university also offers campus safety and security services like 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols, late night transport service, 24-hour emergency telephones, internet access, lighted sidewalks, and controlled dormitory access. 

Future campus development

On December 7, 2009, a 25-Year Master Plan was published, outlining future campus development and construction projects, which involved the construction of the University Hall and the Integrated Sciences Complex, as well as the improvements to the Boston HarborWalk. 

Projects include:

A $137 million project managed by Hill International and designed by NBBJ to demolish the original Science Center, the majority of the campus substructure, the university swimming pool building, a plaza connecting those facilities, and to construct a campus quadrangle and 300-space parking lot in their place. The project began in July 2020 and is expected to be completed by the 2022–2023 winter.

A second all-purpose academic building (General Academic Building No. 2), which got $100 million in state funding in 2012 and that is to be built next to Wheatley Hall in between the Campus Center bus stop and the University Drives South and East.

The university offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, and also offers certificate programs and a corporate, continuing, and distance learning program.

UMass Admission Requirement

To gain admission into UMass, applicants must have:

  1. Minimum GPA of 3.2 and 3.4 for transfer students.
  2. A strong application essay.
  3. A great letter of recommendation.

One good thing about UMass Boston is their “waiting list.” The waiting list is created for a small group of students who fall below the minimum GPA. These students are considered if the university doesn’t reach its yield goal. But it’s best to meet all requirements set out by the university, so you can be granted admission.

Financial aid is generally awarded based on need or merit. Through this, students can secure funding to use and pay for their university education. 

Need-based aid is determined by you or your family’s established ability to pay for college, as calculated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA. The average need-based scholarship awarded to first-year students at UMass Boston was $12,744. Additionally, 70% of students for the academic year of 2022 received need-based financial aid.

Merit-based aid is awarded for a specific talent or athletic or academic achievement. In 2022, the average merit-based scholarship awarded to first-year students at UMass Boston was $7,247.

Student activities at UMass

There are various student activities at UMass for students to get engaged in. UMass is home to many publications such as the student-run and financed newspaper The Mass Media, the yearbook, Watermark arts and literary magazine, and The Beacon monthly humor magazine. 

The university also owns and runs a radio station called WUMB-FM (91.9).  WUMB-FM (91.9) is a 24-hour, non-commercial, public radio station, that broadcasts folk music programs and produces the award-winning public and cultural affairs program, Commonwealth Journal.

The undergraduates are represented by the Undergraduate Student Government, which involves the executive office of the USG President, the Undergraduate Student Senate, and the office of the USG Chief Justice. On the other hand, the graduate students are represented by the Graduate Student Assembly. UMass Boston’s graduate student employees (research assistants, teaching assistants, and administrative assistants) are represented by the Graduate Employee Organization/UAW Local 1596—UMass Boston Chapter.

The university also has a huge waterfront recreation program. The Division of Marine Operations runs the university’s waterfront which supports environmental and recreational education programs. Full-time students at UMass Boston are offered free sailing lessons and boat rentals, kayaks, paddleboards, and even harbour cruises.
