  • 3 credits of Social Studies-Including: world/human geography or world history, U.S. history since 1877, U.S. government (half credit) and economics (half credit)
  • 2 credits of Foreign Language
  • 1 credit of Fine Arts
  • 1 credit of Physical Education

  • If not admitted into the university as a freshman and you decide to go to another school, and later apply for transfer admission to Texas State University later, you are required to complete 30 hours of transferable credit with a minimum GPA of a 2.25.
  • Texas State University even recommends that you go to another college and later apply for transfer admission, if you were not admitted as a freshman.
  • If you are from a non-ranking school that does not fall into the non-traditional school; you will be assigned a rank.

What are the admission requirements for international students at Texas State University?

  • If you are not a United States citizen, then you are an international student. Hence, you need a permanent resident. You must also meet the same admission requirements established for U.S. citizens and then complete a U.S. Students Application.
  • The International Student Application should be completed via ApplyTexas or Coalition for College.
  • You are required to submit the application along with all your academic credentials
  • You are required to submit your original academic records as well as a certified English translation of your academic records if the originals are not in English.
  • There is an application fee which you must pay. It is $90.00, and it is non-refundable.
  • Proof of English proficiency- You are required to show how proficient you are in English if your native language is not English or your language of instruction is not English. Texas State University accepts either of the following measures of English proficiency for regular admission:
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

TOEFL minimum score: 550 (paper-based test), 78 total scores (internet-based test) with the following minimum section scores: 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 19 in Speaking, and 18 in Writing

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

 IELTS minimum score: 6.5 with at least a 6.0 in each section

  • The TOEFL or IELTS will be waived for you if you meet one of the following criteria:
  • If you graduated from a U.S. high school and completed three full years of regular English (non-ESL) course work.  You will be treated in likewise manner as a U.S applicant. You are however encouraged to submit an SAT or ACT, if available
  • If you successfully complete at least three consecutive years of high school within an exempt country including three years of regular English with a grade “B” or higher grade.
  • If your score is 520 or higher on the SAT I Evidence-based Reading and Writing, or if your score is 21 or higher on the ACT English component.
  • If you scored an International Baccalaureate grade of 4 or higher in English A1 or A2 (Higher Level or Standard Level) or English B (Higher Level)
  • If you earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. college or university
  • If you successfully completed 45 or more semester hours of transferable credit from an accredited U.S. college or university, or within an exempt country
  • If you successfully completed 30 semester hours of credit which must include College Writing I and College Writing II with grades of C or higher (ESL courses do not count as transferable courses)
  • If you scored an Advanced Level exam in English Language on GCE, GCSE, IGCSE or HKCEE with grade of C or higher
  • If you successfully completed all level 5500 Texas State Intensive English classes with composite grade of A or B and positive recommendation from the program director.
  • You may be eligible for the Texas State Intensive English (TSIE) program, if you do not yet have the required level of English proficiency, but you are able to meet the established admission requirements
