Originally, the Aworis were the first inhabitants of Lagos State. This was as far back as the 15^th century.  The Binis then came up in the 16^th century. The Awori then moved to an Island that is now known as Iddo and then to Lagos Island. Between 16^th and  mid-19^th century, the area was dominated by the Benin Empire. Oba Ado, a prince of Benin Kingdom gave the name “Eko” which is still in use till date. The Portuguese settlers gave the name “Lagos”.
