The acceptance rate for Wesleyan University is 16.5%. For the Class of 2023 ( which enrolled in the Fall of 2019), Wesleyan received 13,264 applications and accepted only 2,186 (16.5%), and enrolled only 771. This makes Wesleyan University “most selective.”

About Wesleyan University

Wesleyan University is a private liberal arts university located in Middletown, Connecticut. Established in 1831 as a men’s college under the fundings of the Methodist Episcopal Church and also with the funding of prominent people of Middletown. The college was the first institution of higher education to be named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. It is now a nonspiritual institution.

The college enrolled female applicants from 1872 to 1909 but didn’t become fully co-educational until 1970 making them the first college to adopt co-education. Prior to full co-education, Wesleyan alumni and other supporters of women’s education initiated the Connecticut College for women in 1912. Wesleyan, together with Amherst and Williams colleges, is part of “The Little Three”, also referred to as the Little Ivies. 

Wesleyan University has notable alumni in the arts and sciences, politics and government, literature, business, academia, and journalism. Its alumni include 14 Rhodes scholars, 13 Pulitzer Prize winners, three Truman Scholars, 16 presidential cabinet members, 156 Fulbright scholars, 11 governors, three Guggenheim fellows, two attorneys general of the United States, and seven MacArthur fellows. Also, four Nobel laureates have been associated with Wesleyan as faculty members.

Wesleyan University Campuses

Wesleyan occupies a 360-acre campus, with more than 340 buildings, including the five-building College Row; Andrus Public Affairs Center; Olin Memorial Library; Shanklin and Hall-Atwater Laboratories; and the Exley Science Center. 

The university offers almost 200 student organizations, including several acapella groups. Greek life has a long rich history at Wesleyan University, with several fraternities and sororities on campus, including the coed fraternity Eclectic Society. 

Wesleyan University provides several student services, including health service, nonremedial tutoring, health insurance, and placement service. Wesleyan University also provides campus safety and security services like 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols, late night transport service, 24-hour emergency telephones, lighted pathways, controlled dormitory access (key, security card, etc.). 

Freshmen are required to live on campus, together with the majority of students who live in campus residence halls, apartments, or houses.

Wesleyan University Faculties and Degree Programs

The university had a total UG enrollment of 2,852 as of the fall of 2020 and uses a semester-based academic calendar. The institution’s 46 undergraduate academic departments offer over 900 courses each semester and more than 900 individual tutorials. Wesleyan also offers nine Academic Centers and 13 interdisciplinary programs. 

Undergraduates receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in one (or more) of 45 major concentrations. 

Students can triple major if they want. Students can also choose a custom-designed major, known as a University Major. According to the Columbia Encyclopedia, “Wesleyan is noted for its undergraduate programs of tutorial instruction and independent study.”Approximately 52% of students undertake independent study.”

 

Wesleyan offers 3–2 programs in engineering with the Columbia University’s School of Engineering and the California Institute of Technology. These programs allow students to receive degrees in five years from both Wesleyan (B.A.) and Columbia or Caltech (B.Sc., Engineering). 

Additionally, Wesleyan offers a BA/MA Program in the sciences leading to a bachelor’s degree in the fourth year and a master’s degree in the fifth year, and tuition for the fifth year of the master’s degree is waived.

400;”>Undergraduates can pursue studies in pre-law, pre-medicine, and pre-business through any major. Most classes at the university are small; the major class size for undergraduates is 10–19 students, and the student to faculty ratio is 8 to 1.

Students are encouraged in the first two years of their study to take a minimum of two courses from two different departments in each of three areas: humanities and the arts, behavioural sciences, and natural sciences and mathematics. In the second two years, students are expected to take one course in each of these three areas. 

Writing is emphasized across all disciplines and 99% of students partake in Wesleyan’s Writing Across the Curriculum program.

Freshmen are offered First Year Initiative seminars, which are designed to prepare them for upper-level courses by emphasizing writing, discussion, analysis, and critical thinking.

Wesleyan University Admission Requirement

Admission standards at Wesleyan University are considered “most selective” by U.S. News & World Report. So you have to bring your A-game.

You should have:

  • An SAT score between 1340 and 1520 or an ACT score of 31 and 34. 
  • Recommended GPA of 3.91
  • Personal Statement or Essay
  • Two letters of recommendation.

With a GPA of 3.91, you must be at the top of your class. You will almost need straight A’s in all your classes to compete with other applicants. Additionally, you should be taking hard classes – AP or IB courses – to show that college-level academics is easy for you.

The application deadline is Jan. 1 and the application fee at Wesleyan University is $55.

Scholarships for Wesleyan University

Wesleyan offers a complete financial aid program and is devoted to making it financially feasible for any student admitted to attend. All Merit scholarships are awarded automatically when a student is accepted to the university. Wesleyan awards scholarships along with financial aid from federal, state, and institutional funds including loans, grants,  scholarships, and student employment. 

LANE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

This scholarship is awarded yearly to academically superlative first-year applicants for admission whose intended major is in the area of fine arts. Candidates must have strong academic credentials, and demonstrate their interest and ability to engage in research.

Requirements: A minimum 3.0 high school GPA

FINDLAY SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Awarded yearly to academically superlative first-year applicants for admission who intend to declare a major in either the humanities or social sciences.

Requirements: Minimum 3.49 high school GPA

MUNROE SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Awarded to students majoring in mathematics,  sciences, or dual-degree engineering. Preference is given to students who show particular promise in scientific inquiry or research. Recipients are also entitled to research stipends of up to $1,000 during their junior and senior years.

PEYTON ANDERSON SCHOLARSHIP

Full-tuition (plus room and board) annual scholarship for students from the Middle Georgia area who are devoted to teaching in the Middle Georgia area after graduation. One-fifth of the scholarship is a loan that will be waived at 20% a year for five years once the recipient teaches within Middle Georgia.

Requirements: Minimum 3.6 high school GPA  and Commitment to teaching in Middle Georgia for five years.
