About Quinnipiac University

Quinnipiac University is a private university situated in Hamden, Connecticut. The university grants undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through its College of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering, School of Business, School of Communication, School of Law, School of Health Sciences, School of Medicine, School of Education, and School of Nursing. The university also hosts the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute and its acceptance rate is 70%.

The university was founded in 1929 and currently has a total undergraduate enrollment of 6,841. The university setting is suburban, and the campus size is approximately 600 acres. It uses a semester-based academic calendar. 

Quinnipiac also has a joint J.D./MBA program that lets students cut down on one or two semesters of extra classes. Outside the classroom, students can discover about a dozen fraternities and sororities, over 100 student organizations, or the abundant campus events planned by the Student Programming Board. 

Quinnipiac University Campuses

Quinnipiac University has three campuses: the Mount Carmel campus which is located off of Mount Carmel Avenue in Hamden; the North Haven Campus in North Haven, just north of New Haven, Connecticut, and the York Hill campus located off of Sherman Avenue in Hamden.

The oldest campus is the Mount Carmel Campus. Many of the university’s main buildings can be found on this campus. The university administration, the Carl Hansen Student Center, Arnold Bernhard Library, and many of the student residences are found on this campus.

In 2007, Quinnipiac university acquired a 100-acre campus in North Haven, Connecticut, and has gradually been altering it for use for graduate programs at the university. Most graduate programs are taught at this campus.

The York Hill Campus is located on a hill about a half-mile from the Mount Carmel Campus. It began with the development of the People’s United Center. In 2010 a new student center was built on the campus, as well as expanded parking and residence facilities as part of a $300 million expansion of the 250-acre campus. York Hill is actually a “green” campus, making use of renewable energy and environmentally friendly resources, including one of the first major wind farms, integrated into a university campus.

Quinnipiac University provides a number of student services at their campus, including health service, nonremedial tutoring, health insurance, placement service. Quinnipiac University also offers campus safety and security services like 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols, late night transport service, 24-hour emergency telephones, internet access, lighted sidewalks, controlled dormitory access (security, key, card, etc.). 

55% of students live in college-owned, -affiliated, or – operated housing while 45% of students live off-campus.

These are the Admission requirement to have for you to be considered.

  1. High School GPA Scores are Required.
  2. High School Class Rankings are Recommended.
  3. Average GPA of 3.47.
  4. College Prep Classes are Required.
  5. Recommendation Letters are Required.
  6. SAT of 1175 or ACT of 26
  7. TOEFL Exam (Foreign Language Students) is Required.

Quinnipiac is “test-optional” for standardized tests for undergraduate applicants, but recommends submitting SAT or ACT scores, or even both. The average SAT score is 1175 and the average ACT score is 26. 

On the other hand, test scores are compulsory for Quinnipiac’s Dual-Degree BS/MHS in Physician Assistant (4+27 months) programs, and Accelerated Dual-Degree Bachelor’s/JD (3+3), or for applicants that have been homeschooled.

The application fee is $65 and the deadline is Feb 1.

Scholarship options for Quinnipiac University

A type of scholarship offered to students especially freshmen at Quinnipiac is the Academic scholarship.

Academic scholarships are awarded to incoming students through the Office of Admissions. The scholarships are offered automatically to incoming students with no need for separate forms to complete. Students are notified of their scholarship in their letter of acceptance. The amount of the scholarship is the same every year, provided eligibility requirements are met.

  • First-Year Student Merit Scholarships

Scholarship amount: $12,000–$28,000 

Donor: Quinnipiac University.

This scholarship is awarded by the admissions office based on a student’s overall academic achievements and is renewed annually at the same amount, as long as the student continues to be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate and meets the renewal conditions stated in the letter of acceptance.

  • International Student Scholarship

Scholarship amount: Varies.

Donor: Quinnipiac University.

Quinnipiac provides a small pool of scholarship funds that are awarded to international students who show strong academic achievement.

  • Transfer Student Scholarship

Scholarship amount: $6,500–$20,000 

Donor: Quinnipiac University.

Transfer candidates are automatically reviewed for a merit scholarship, as well as Phi Theta Kappa awards, during the admissions process.

  • Athletic Scholarships

Scholarship amount: Varies.

Athletic scholarships are available to athletes that are qualified as determined by their coach, athletic director, and NCAA bylaws.

  • Multiple Sibling Award

Scholarship amount: $2,000 per year, per eligible sibling

This is more of a grant than a scholarship. Quinnipiac Multiple Sibling Awards are available to full-time, undergraduate, and graduate siblings simultaneously in attendance at Quinnipiac.

Conditions associated with Quinnipiac Univerisity.

  1. All merit scholarships are awarded by the admissions office and are not available to students who do not receive them in their initial year.
  2. Students who drop below full-time, or fail to meet the minimum cumulative grade point average, will be notified by the Office of Financial Aid if their merit scholarship will be discontinued.
  3. Students who lose their merit scholarship can appeal this decision and maybe be re-evaluated after an additional semester to have their merit scholarship reinstated.

  • Earnest Scholarship Fund

Earnest launched a scholarship fund that help 50 students take on less debt. The Earnest Scholarship Fund awards $5,000 to 50 justified students. There are no essays to write, no minimum GPA requirement, or residency requirement, and no fees, to ensure every student has the opportunity to enter the scholarship. Applicants can be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (including DACA students).

  • Healy Foundation

Students entering junior or senior year at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States. Students must have a GPA above 3.0 and existing financial needs.

  • Sallie Mae & Thurgood Marshall Fund

The scholarship is open to minority students and those from marginalized or underrepresented communities, including Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, Pacific Islander, low income, first generation, and students from rural communities, among others. You don’t need to have a Sally Mae loan or be a customer of theirs to be qualified.

  • American Association of University Women, Shoreline Branch

Open to women who live there and have completed at least 60 college credits with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • Search engines

Well, this one is more of a website you can use to search for scholarship options that are available. There are Access Scholarships; a search engine hub for many scholarships across the board. And Finaid scholarships; which is a free, all-inclusive website for students seeking outside scholarship assistance.

Student life at Quinnipiac University

The student life at Quinnipiac University is quite bubbling. For starters, you have the Quinnipiac polling institute which has received national recognition for its independent surveys of residents all over the United States. The polling institute conducts public opinion polls on public policy and politics as a public service as well as for academic research. 

The polling institute has been cited by major news outlets throughout Europe and North America and Europe, including Fox News, The Washington Post, The New York Times, USA Today, CNN, and Reuters.

Then you also have the Greek life which is very evident at Quinnipiac. Quinnipiac is home to seven fraternities and nine sororities. There are:

FAQ on Quinnipiac University

Is it mandatory for first-year students to live on campus?

New first-year students are required to live in campus housing for their first 3 years of study. Generally, upper-class students live on the York Hill Campus, while first-year and sophomore students live on the Mount Carmel Campus. 

Is housing guaranteed for all 4 years?

Housing is only guaranteed for the first 3 years and on a space-available basis in the senior year.

Are there any certain subjects/courses in high school that is required to be taken?

Quinnipiac looks for a college preparatory sequence of courses, with a minimum of 16 academic courses including English, math, science, social science, and a language. For nursing and health sciences programs, we look for 4 years of math and 4 years of science courses.

Are recommendations, and/or essays required for admission?

Quinnipiac requires a personal essay from you that tells them more about who you are, and what speaks to your values, goals, and aspirations as a student.

The university also requires one letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counsellor, or someone who can reflect on your dedication and work ethic.

Does Quinnipiac require an interview for admission?

No, they don’t. Although Quinnipiac does not require an interview, the university welcomes the opportunity to talk with students about their goals and Quinnipiac. Interviews are available weekdays year-round, and in the fall when counsellors travel to regional areas. For those at a greater distance, a skype interview can be arranged, if requested.

Do Quinnipiac accept AP, IB, and/or college courses for credit?

Yes. Quinnipiac awards credit for Advanced Placement (AP) courses completed in high school for students who receive a minimum required score on the AP exam. Students who have taken Higher Level (HL) IB courses with a minimum score of 4 also receive credit. Quinnipiac also gives credit for college courses completed as part of the high school curriculum.

Does Quinnipiac accept self-reported test scores?

Yes, if students show their individual scores on the application or in follow-up materials, Quinnipiac will use it; however, official test scores must be provided prior to enrollment.
