10 Methods On How To Improve Dorm Wifi

We always want to be online and keep up with the fast-paced nature of 21st-century technology. To do this you need to be connected to the internet, and connecting to the internet most of the time means you will have to be connected to wifi.

But if your wifi is not functioning optimally then it means you will be having disconnections while you’re connected to the internet.  These disconnections can be from several causes including your wifi configuration setting, positioning, WiFi subscribers, etc.

How To Improve Dorm Wifi

If you have been having issues with your dorm WiFi connection, then you are at the right place. As we would be looking into how to improve your dorm WiFi connection. There are several ways to improve your dorm WiFi speed performance, signal, and bandwidth some of these ways include:

  1. Check if your router is in the right Place
  2. Change your WiFi Channel
  3. Update Your WiFi Driver
  4. Rebooting your WiFi router
  5. Secure Your WiFi Signal
  6. Increase Your WiFi Bandwidth
  7. Make Installations of wifi boosters
  8. Deploy Powerline networking to Increase WiFi Speed
  9. Make use of Multiple In Multiple Out(MIMO) Access Points

Check if your router is in the right place

In most cases, the router is placed in a corner of the dorm. This means that you may be missing out on better service because of poor placement. To improve your wifi signal, try moving the wifi router to a central location, it should be at least 3-4 meters away from other electronic devices and walls, and not near any windows or doors.

If you can’t find a central location (or if there are too many obstacles in your way), try placing it as high up as possible. A higher position will help ensure that no walls block its signal path and make sure that everyone has access to good coverage throughout their dorm.

Change your WiFi channel

If you’re having trouble getting a good signal from your WiFi network, one of the easiest things to do is change the channel. Your router should be set to use one of the least crowded channels, which will improve performance and prevent interference from other networks and devices.

You can find what channel your router is using by opening a web browser and entering the wifi IP address into the address bar. You’ll then be able to access its configuration menu, where you can make changes as needed.

When choosing a new channel for your network, try not to choose channels 1 or 6; these are often used in industrial settings and may cause excessive interference with nearby routers operating at those frequencies. Instead of going straight for an open channel (like 4 or 11), consider choosing one that’s just below it on the list you might get better results than if you went with an entirely different zone altogether.

Update Your WiFi driver

If your WiFi is lagging in performance you can improve its performance by updating the driver. To update your wifi driver you need to first make sure you’re logged into your PC with an administrator account.

Then, open the Device Manager and find your WiFi card under “Network Adapters.” Right-click it, select Properties from the context menu, then click the Driver tab.

If there’s an updated version available for download and install, you’ll see a message asking if you want to update your wifi driver software, then proceed to click yes and download the update. Regularly updating your wifi software drivers keeps your hardware up-to-date with new features that could improve its performance or fix bugs that might cause problems like poor connection speed or poor range coverage (among other issues).

Rebooting your WiFi router

Sometimes, you may need to reboot your router or modem. You can do this by unplugging the device, waiting a few seconds, and then plugging it back in again. You can also try restarting your computer or phone if they are connected to the same WiFi network, this will help clear out any problems that may have occurred in the background. Rebooting of routers seldom corrects minor lack of performance problems of WiFi routers.

Secure your WiFi signal

Use WPA2 encryption. The most secure option is protecting your WiFi network. This will help keep your WiFi functioning optimally, the WPA2 encryption is the best and also the most difficult to set up. You’ll need to know your router’s admin page (if you do not, Google it), and you’ll need to make sure you have the latest firmware on your router.

In creating a password for your wifi you need to use a strong password. A strong password is at least eight characters long, contains upper case letters, lower case letters, and numbers, uses special characters (such as [email protected]#$%^&*), and has no dictionary words in it at all.

Increase your WiFi bandwidth

Increase your wifi bandwidth by using powerline networking to connect a wired device like a desktop computer directly to your wireless router. This will give you the same speed and reliability as hard-wired Ethernet, but without needing to run another cable across the room.

Install an antenna on top of your dorm or apartment building that can boost your wireless signal. If there’s no room for this on top of the building, try to find an external spot that has good exposure to satellites in space (avoiding trees).

Add multiple antennas and access points so that each channel is being used simultaneously instead of sequentially for better performance. Each additional antenna also helps increase bandwidth as well as range coverage area with increased throughput speeds over standard single-stream 802.11ac Wi-Fi networks which only use one antenna per access point at a time.

Make Installations of wifi boosters

To improve the wireless signal, place the extender in the line of sight of your wireless router. If this is not possible, place it as close to your hotspot as possible.

When using a WiFi booster, it is important to know that they work best when placed in the line of sight between two devices and/or an access point (AP). This allows them to receive and amplify signals from one device and broadcast it back out again over another path.

This means that if you are trying to get a better wifi connection for your dorm room in college or university student housing then placing an extender on top of a desk near where someone will be sitting would make sense since they will likely be within range when using their phone or laptop computer.

Deploy powerline networking to increase WiFi speed

You can use Powerline networking to improve your WiFi performance while you’re in your dorm. The powerline technology uses a powerline adapter to create an Ethernet connection through your home’s electrical system. If you want to use this method, buy a powerline adapter with at least two Ethernet ports so you can connect it to both the router and your device for access.

You can buy a network switch that has four or more ports so you can connect multiple devices to your wifi network at once. A network switch is useful if you have several computers or other devices in the same room that need WiFi access, but it does not offer any speed improvement over connecting them directly to your router with an Ethernet cable.

Make use of Multiple In Multiple Out (MIMO) access points

Regardless of what version of wifi you are running, you can improve your wifi performance using the multiple in multiple out approach. To do this make sure that all of the devices in your dorm room are using the 5GHz frequency band and not the 2.4GHz one (your router should be able to detect which device is connected via which band automatically).

This will help minimize interference and enable faster data rates on newer hardware.  This technology helps in faster signal transfer from the router where they are produced to where they are needed.

FAQ

Do Wi-Fi extenders work in college dorms?

Yes, WiFi extenders also known as boosters work in college dorms depending on certain factors. If the routers are placed in your room then it will be easier to deploy the extenders, but if the router is a central dorm router then you will have to find a midpoint between your room and the router to dept your extender.

How do I get Wi-Fi in my dorm room?

Most colleges and universities do have wifi in the living areas of the students, but you can also bring your wifi to a dorm or bring a booster to amplify the signals from the school-provided wifi.

Why are routers not allowed in dorms?

Several schools prohibit the use or bringing of private routers to your dorm. Schools that prohibit the use of private wifi routers, do so because those private routers could cause problems to the school’s WiFi networks and wired networks.

Can you buy your WiFi in college?

Yes, you can buy and install your wifi in college if your school allows students to come with their WiFi routers.

Conclusion

We must have had the problem with our wifi not giving us the speed we want or the signal strength we want in our days in school. But if you are still suffering the problem of lagging wifi, these ways of improving your wifi will help you to have your high speed and better-working wifi.

Be it in your dorm room, or even in your living apartment anywhere else. You can try out any or several of these ways of improving your wifi and know which one(s) work out for you.
