Florida Atlantic University also known as Florida Atlantic or FAU is a public research university with its main campus in Boca Raton, Florida, and various satellite campuses in Dania Beach, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Jupiter, and Fort Pierce. The University was established in 1964 as the first public university in southeast Florida, offering only upper-division and graduate-level courses. As of 2018, enrollment into the university has grown to over 30,000 students representing over 50 states and 140 countries. 

Since 2004, the University raised its admissions standards, constructed new facilities, increased research funding, and done noteworthy partnerships with major research institutions.

FAU Campuses

The school has six campuses shared across Broward, Palm Beach, and St. Lucie counties. The area is home to over three million people. The main campus of the university is situated in Boca Raton city in Palm Beach County. 

The county houses the John D. MacArthur Campus located in the City of Jupiter. Also, the school has three campuses in the Broward County cities of Dania Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Davie. 

Florida Atlantic University also has a campus in the St. Lucie County city of Fort Pierce. In addition to students who attend classes physically, 1,612 distance learning students conduct their studies over the internet or through other means. These students make up 6% of the university’s student body.

Boca Raton campus

The Boca Raton campus which is the main campus of FAU is home to a wide variety of university programs and facilities. These facilities are 

• labs and classrooms
• a 6,000-gallon shark tank for aquatic research
• athletic and recreational facilities 
• housing for students
• and even a movie theatre. 

The Boca Raton campus serves over 19,000 students, which makes up about 70% of the university’s student body, providing several academic activities, programs, and services.

The Boca Raton campus is also home to many other institutions, including FAU High School, the A. D. Henderson University School, the Lifelong Learning Society, and one of two Florida Atlantic University Research Parks.

Jupiter–John D. MacArthur Campus

There is another campus in Jupiter which is located in northern Palm Beach County. The John D. MacArthur Campus, named after businessman and philanthropist John D. MacArthur, was established in 1999. The Campus occupies 45 acres and houses a library, eight classroom and office buildings, a utility plant, and a 500-seat auditorium.

The Campus is also home to the Scripps Florida, the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, and the FAU Brain Institute. The campus serves nearly 1,262 students, which is just 4% of the university’s student body.

Broward County campuses

Dania Beach–SeaTech

The Dania Beach Campus was established in 1997 as a state-funded Type II research center. The University itself is part of Florida Atlantic’s Department of Ocean Engineering which was established in 1965 as the first ocean engineering undergraduate program in the country. The campus is located on 8 acres of land between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean. 

Daina campus is home to university faculty and students devoted to ocean engineering research and development in the areas of marine vehicles, acoustics, oceanography, and physical marine materials and nanocomposites, and hydrodynamics. The Campus serves nearly 70 students, which is roughly 1% of the university’s total student body.

Davie

The Davie Campus of Florida Atlantic University was established in 1990. The campus serves nearly 3,488 students and is the university’s second-largest campus by enrollment.

The campus has a multi-story student union with a multipurpose area and student lounge, offices for student government and student organizations, a cafeteria, and a bookstore. The union also has a student health center that provides medical services and health counseling. 

Davie is also the home of “environmental research initiatives focused on Everglades restoration.”

Fort Lauderdale

The university has two buildings in downtown Fort Lauderdale, The Askew Tower (AT) and the Higher Education Complex (HEC) on Las Olas Boulevard and they are both considered part of one Fort Lauderdale campus. The campus offers courses in communication, graphic design, urban and regional planning, and architecture. The campus is home to nearly 900 students, which makes up 3.2% of the student body. 

FAU Faculties and Degree Programs

FAU offers a lot of degree options for students to choose from. The school has ten colleges which in total offer over 180 different bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs. They are:

The Wilkes Honors College is situated on the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, Florida. It focuses on liberal arts education and on the platform of a public university, but it is still equal to a private liberal arts college. 

The University Scholars Program on the other hand is situated on the Boca Raton Campus, which offers special honors courses, conferences, forums, and advanced course substitution for freshmen.

The average class size at FAU for undergraduates is 33 students, while for graduate classes, it is 12 students. The student-to-faculty ratio is 20:1. The top three undergraduate majors by enrollment are elementary education, management, and accounting.  While the top three graduate majors by enrollment are business administration,  accounting, and educational leadership respectively.

FAU Admission Requirement

SAT scores are compulsory for admission to FAU. To get admitted into the university, the average SAT score required is 1160. Though, in some cases, some applicants have obtained an SAT score of 1080 or below and have even gotten into the university. 

As for ACT, scores of 24 get accepted. Most of the students accepted by the University have ACT scores in the range of 22-26. To be considered for admission by FAU, you need to have a minimum ACT score of 22. And, ACT scores are also required for admission consideration.

As for GPA, you need to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale. The average accepted GPA is 3.46 GPA.

The following units of study in high school are compulsory for applicants to be considered for admission to FAU. These are also the only courses that are accepted and calculated in the grade point average (GPA) used to determine admissions eligibility:

• English (3 with substantial composition): 4 units.
• Mathematics (Algebra 1 level and above): 4 units.
• Natural Science (2 with lab): 3 units.
• Social Science: 3 units.
• Foreign Language (of the same language): 2 units.
• Academic Electives: 2 units.

Student Accommodation at FAU

Accommodation at the institution is available on the Boca Raton and John D. MacArthur campuses. It is mandatory that for all full-time freshmen to reside in university housing.  Though exemptions are made for students who are either 21 or older, married or reside with parent(s) or legal guardian(s) within a 50-mile radius of the Boca Raton campus.

The Wilkes Honors College on the MacArthur Campus requires all students to live on-campus within its two residence halls, though, exceptions are made for students who are married, 26 years of age, or have dependent children.

Boca Raton’s on-campus housing facilities are: 

• Indian River Towers (opened 2001)
• Heritage Park Towers (opened 2004)
• Glades Park Towers (opened 2007)
• Parliament Hall (opened 2013)
• University Village Apartments (UVA)
• And Innovation Village Apartments (IVA) (opened 2011). 

Heritage Park and Glades Park Towers each have 602 beds with 96 single rooms. University Village Apartments and Innovation Village Apartments exclusively serve upperclassmen while the other residence halls exclusively serve freshmen students. 

The university also offers accommodation to the upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in the Business and Professional Women’s Scholarship House for women with a strong academic background.

The newest residence on the Boca Raton campus is the Innovation Village Apartments (IVA), which consists of two buildings: IVA North and IVA South. It’s a 1,200-bed apartment-style housing facility for graduate, upperclassmen, and medical students. It offers amenities that one would find in a high-rise apartment complex: retail dining, lounges, fitness centers, common areas, a pool/cabana, and even a volleyball court.
