From Westerlin with its own fitness center to historic House on the Hill, all Augustana homes cater to key stages in students’ life. Game tournaments, holiday traditions, movie evenings, contests, breakfast for supper, student club meetings, and pizza, pizza, pizza are all on the menu.
First-year students live in Andreen, Seminary, and Westerlin Halls. Swanson Commons and Erickson Hall are where sophomores dwell. Juniors live in college-owned houses and apartments in the Augustana neighborhood. These are known as “transitional living areas” or TLAs. Seniors generally live off-campus.
Professional staff, including master’s level area coordinators who live in the halls, are stationed at each home. One or two resident directors and a team of community advisers work with the coordinator.
Advisors are upper-class students who have been trained to help 30-50 residents create a good floor community.
Augustana College Athletics.
The Augustana Vikings play in almost all of their sports at the NCAA Division III level in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). The sole current exception is women’s bowling, where the Vikings are original members of the newly formed Central Intercollegiate Bowling Conference.
The Vikings participate in a total of 25 male and female team sports, with five out of every seven students participating in varsity, club, or intramural sports. Coach Bob Reade’s Augustana College football squad won four straight Division III national championships between 1983 and 1986.
Coach Reade’s overall winning percentage of 87 percent is third all-time after Larry Kehres and Knute Rockne. From 1912 through 1937, Augustana College was a member of the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
